The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. You will learn the foundational concepts and techniques of software engineering, such as engineering mathematics, engineering design, computing theory, systems engineering principles, database concepts, programming and more.
Project work will develop your high-level technical and problem-solving skills. You will gain communication and teamwork skills, and learn how to be a good leader.
You will complete four subjects to deepen your software engineering training and extend your engineering programming abilities.
You will also broaden your skill set by completing four subjects from a chosen minor. Minor options include Cloud Computing, Enterprise Systems Development, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Creative Computing, Data Science, Cyber Assurance, and cross-disciplinary minors Blockchain Enabled Business and Entrepreneurship.
In your final year, in addition to furthering your programming knowledge and skills, you will undertake a major research project that can be analytical, experimental, design or computational in nature (or some combination of these).
This capstone project includes a work-integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context, and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.
Through this project, you will have the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your whole course.

With RMIT's Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) (Honours), you can be competitive for many mid-level positions in software development as well as for jobs in related fields like cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, and cybersecurity. You can apply for positions in the internet, communications, healthcare, IT services and gaming industries.
Professionals who are new to the field often start out as programmers and work their way up to positions of greater responsibility, including as a software architect or project manager. Even at the entry level, employers may specify that applicants should be knowledgeable about all stages of project work. Employers may be educational companies, publishers, credit unions, or even search engine giants. Companies such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft hire strong candidates at the bachelor's level for a range of positions.
You can also work on embedded software projects. This type of software is used in virtually every industry, from medicine to aeronautics, and is a core component in most electronic devices we interact with daily. In addition, the skills and knowledge in embedded systems and digital hardware are essential for employment as a software engineer in many industries beyond IT sector. The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.
You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.
If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.
You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.
