Kamran Ghorbani received the B.Eng (Hons.) and Ph.D. degree from RMIT University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, in 1994 and 2001, respectively. From 1994 to 1996, he was a Graduate RF Engineer with AWA Defence Industries, where he worked on early warning radar systems (ARL2001). From 1999 to 2001, he was a Senior RF Engineer with Tele-IP, where he worked on VHF transceivers for commercial aircraft. In 2001, he joined the Department of Communication and Electronic Engineering (now the School of Engineering), RMIT University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, as a continuing academic. He is currently the Research Leader for RF & Antennas group. He is responsible for strategic planning and managing the research group. His research interests include radar/microwave devices and systems, ferroelectric materials, metamaterials, RF energy harvesting, multifunctional microwave structure and phased-array antennas.
Prof Ghorbani has initiated and managed more than 20 defence-related research projects with DSTG, PMB, DSO, AFRL, DefendTex, and GKN aerospace (DMTC) as the industry partners, an ARC Linkage International Grant with Rutgers University (USA) and an ARC Linkage Grant with BAE systems. The topics of the projects were, metamaterials, radar for early fire detection, embedded antenna for automobile, conformal load-bearing structure, slotted waveguide antenna stiffened structure, radar systems for detecting projectiles, cooling system using microfluidic, tunable microwave filters, and Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR).
Prof. Ghorbani is the AdCom member of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). He was the Chair of MTT-S MGA committee and Vice-Chair of MTT-S Technical Coordination & Future Direction Committee. He was the Chair of the Asia–Pacific Microwave Conference APMC2011, Melbourne, Australia. He was the Co-Chair of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Microwave and RF Conference, IMaRC2014, India. He was the Chair of the first Australian Microwave Symposium, AMS2014, Melbourne. He was the Chair of the Technical Program Committee of the Asia–Pacific Microwave Conference APMC2016, which was held in India. He was the Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques and the IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation.
