Dr. Sarah Costigan is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education and Program Manager of the Bachelor of Health, Physcial Education and Sport within the School of Education at RMIT University.

 

 

 

Teaching interests

Dr. Sarah Costigan is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education and Program Manager of the Bachelor of Health, Physcial Education and Sport within the School of Education at RMIT University.

 

Prior to working at RMIT, Sarah was employed as a Lecturer in Physical Activity and Health (2017-2021; Deakin University), previously lecturing in Physical Education at the University of Newcastle (2010-2014). Sarah has more than a decade of undergraduate lecturing experience. Prior to her academic career, Sarah worked in primary and secondary schools as a Physical Education and Science teacher.

Research interests

Through her research, Sarah has gained experience in the development and evaluation of school-based physical activity interventions, with a specific interest in fitness, mental health and cognition outcomes for adolescents.

 

Sarah has over 30 publications, including one book chapter. Of note, a highly cited meta-analysis evaluating the utility of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to improve health-related fitness in adolescents (Costigan et al., 2015), lead-author on studies reporting an original trial embedding HIIT within physical education (Costigan et al., 2015; Costigan et al., 2016), and co-author on a teacher-facilitated HIIT study (Leahy et al., 2019).

 

Sarah has presented her school-based HIIT research at a number of national and international conferences, including Sports Medicine Australia (Melbourne, 2016), International Society of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (Canada, 2017; Hong Kong, 2018; Prague, 2019) and International Society of Physical Activity and Health (London, 2018) conferences.

 

Throughout her academic career, Sarah has received a number of awards for teaching and research including Best Paper Award for the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Schools Theme (University of Newcastle, 2016), Faculty of Education and Arts Research Higher Degree Publication Prize (University of Newcastle, 2017), Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching and Learning (Deakin University, 2017). And most recently, Asics Best Overall Paper and Best Paper Award in Physical Activity and Health Promotion (Sports Medicine Australia e-Conference; 2021).
