We ask Adam Norris, Founder/Principal Designer at Annular Design, and RMIT alum, six questions about being a business owner.
1. What did you study at RMIT and what attracted you to that program?
I studied Product Design at RMIT Tafe then went into Industrial Design. I always enjoyed solving problems with creativity. Originally, I thought architecture was for me. But I found it too limiting, then I heard of Industrial Design and designing product, service, system solutions - which is very broad and exciting, I love being able to design across a spectrum of industries.
2. What is your business all about?
Providing sustainable focused design services for product and packaging that are accessible and scalable for small to medium enterprises, large business and start-ups.
3. Where do you see your business in 10 years’ time?
The go-to studio for sustainable design collaboration and solutions across business, government, institutes and NGO’s. I hope that by this stage my commercial projects will support the ability to conduct not-for-profit work and projects in social equality, diversity, accessibility and beyond.
4. How has studying at RMIT prepared you to run your business?
When studying both Product Design and Industrial Design you learn critical skills of setting up a business, project management, time management, finance in relation to running operations, such as 3D printing. Additionally, due to great industry connections I got an internship in my second year of study. This led to employment in design whilst I completed my degree and most importantly work experience in businesses from consulting, large multinationals and SME’s.
5. What advice would you have offered yourself when you first started your business?
Be kind to yourself. I started this business when we had our first child who was three months old. So, pairing one of the most pressure intense times in your life with running a business solo means wearing many hats, including; design, management, finance, marketing, business development, and more. I had very high expectations on what I could achieve and often would feel like I was not fulfilling my own expectations. Upon reflection I realise I was doing a hell of a lot! Now when I have a moment to spend on myself or the family, I take that and do not beat myself up for taking that time to ensure my own health and sanity because being kind to yourself pays back dividends.
6. What is your favourite type of product to design?
I enjoy designing many different products as they each present a unique design opportunity. But if I had to pick one it would be medical/health products as their purpose is to improve a person's life.
