We ask Jenny, founder and Director at X NIHILO and RMIT alum, six questions about being a business owner.
1. What did you study at RMIT and what attracted you to that program?
I studied the Master of Fashion and Textile. I had diploma in Design Studies and Bachelors in Fashion Design. However, after going into the work force, I had realised I was missing the knowledge and acumen from the business side of the industry which the master’s degree was the perfect program for me to further my knowledge and understanding beyond the design aspects of the fashion industry.
2. What is your business all about?
Designed in Melbourne, established in 2016. X NIHILO – short for ex nihilo – is a Latin phrase that means “creation out of nothing”. The notion identifies X NIHILO’s aesthetics and vision to craft a sophisticated and honest range of leather goods for the modern women.
3. Where do you see your business in 10 years’ time?
I would love to see more women having X NIHILO in their arms and running errands and go where they want to go. Our goal was always e-commerce focused and which lead us to a massive international market today with 70% of our sales are export including US, Singapore, China, and Japan. I love what I do and love seeing customers in our beautiful, crafted bags with confidence. In 10 years’ time, I would see the business to expand further internationally with extended product categories and brand extensions.
4. How has studying at RMIT prepared you to run your business?
My Master degree at RMIT really was a life changing and eye opening experience. Prior to studying at RMIT, my knowledge was very much embedded in the design, concept, and practical making of fashion. The course prepared really prepared me on how to present designs to the world with a business mentality and the formalities are inevitable in the real world.
5. What advice would you have offered yourself when you first started your business?
Do more research and have plans for when things are good and bad. Be more prepared for success and think big. At the end of the day, it is all about risk management and be ready to take on the opportunities when they arise.
6. What’s your favourite piece from your collection?
It has to be the “Eight Series”. It is our most iconic design that has been loved by many around the world for its versatility, functionality, modern, classic and timeless design which has also won the Good Design award.
