We ask Ethan Cunningham, Professional photographer at Ethan Cunningham Photography, six questions about being a business owner.
1. What did you study at RMIT and what attracted you to that program?
I studied a Bachelor of Arts – Photography, what drew me to this program was my passion for photography and the opportunity to learn from industry professionals. I sought to build upon my interests in photography by gaining new skills which enabled me to produce projects of personal interest. The course exposed me to a variety of genres and skills which aided me in refining my practice.
2. What is your business all about?
‘Ethan Cunningham Photography’ is about capturing moments, people, and places. Whether it is an event, place, business, or sporting match, the goal is always to communicate the atmosphere and emotions of the moment, while also catering to the client’s vision.
3. Where do you see your business in 10 years’ time?
In 10 years’ time I see my business expanding and having a long list of regular and new clients, from major sporting leagues, to news outlets, to loyal individuals who rely on our services.
4. How has studying at RMIT prepared you to run your business?
My course at RMIT prepared me to run my business by teaching me both photography specific skills and techniques. As well as business skills such as how to manage client relationships, how to network, and reach out to people and potential clients
5. What advice would you have offered yourself when you first started your business?
I would have advised myself not to be scared to put myself out there and try to get as much work as possible, also to be confident in myself and believe in my skills, abilities, and experience.
6. Is there a sport you haven’t shot that you really want to?
Yes, I would really love the opportunity to shoot a Formula 1 race. I follow the sport and a few photographers who specialise in F1, and would love to emulate their amazing work, and to also experience and capture the atmosphere of a race.
