We ask Hakim, Founder of Ripe Cheese and RMIT alum, seven questions about being a business owner.
1. What did you study at RMIT and what attracted you to that program?
RMIT’s Bachelor of Business (Marketing) – now known as the Bachelor of Business
2. What is your business all about?
We are the only all-Australian cheese shop in the country. We are committed to championing artisanal local produce.
3. Where do you see your business in 10 years’ time?
1) Multiple shops in other Australian states and overseas.
2) Being the leading advocacy brand for Australian produce/cheese for international markets.
4. How has studying at RMIT prepared you to run your business?
The course's structure and collaborative nature allowed me to work with many different people. It also allowed me to structure my thoughts and business plans efficiently as I’m someone with lots of racing thoughts.
5. What advice would you have offered yourself when you first started your business?
Have a purpose beyond commercial success. Profits go up and down, but your purpose is what drives you to stay resilient and committed. And have a trusted lawyer and accountant. The initial expense can save you lots of money in the long run.
6. Other than Ripe, what is your favourite place in the Queen Vic Market?
I like the meat and seafood hall because I enjoy looking at the produce and feeling inspired.
7. What’s your favourite cheese Ripe sells?
Banksia Reserve from Long Paddock.
It’s a remarkably made semi-hard cheese from a world-renowned cheesemaker in Castlemaine. It is umami packed, savoury and pairs well with olives and sundried tomatoes.

Hakim started his career as a Cheesemonger in 2017 at a deli at the iconic Queen Vic Market. He soon realised no-one at the Market was showcasing Australian cheese so he bought his own shop and created Ripe Cheese in 2019.
