CSIRO Industry PhD Program (iPhD)

This 4 year CSIRO Industry PhD (iPhD) project aims to develop an AI-powered cybersecurity system using large language models to predict and mitigate organisational cyber threats.

The CSIRO Industry PhD Program is a four-year research training program, focusing on applied research that benefits industry by solving real-world challenges. It aims to produce the next generation of innovation leaders.

A four year scholarship package totalling approximately $47,000 per annum tax exempt (2025 rate).

The student must: 

a) Be an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident, or a New Zealand citizen.   

b) Meet participating university PhD admission requirements. 

c) Meet university English language requirements. 

d) Not have previously completed a PhD.

e) Be able to commence the Program in the year of the offer. 

f) Enrol as a full-time PhD student. Part-time arrangements may be considered if approved by the supervisory team and in accordance with university policy.

g) Be prepared to be located at the project location(s) that the host university has approved and, if required, comply with the host university’s external enrolment procedures. 

h) Be prepared to undergo onboarding to CSIRO, which will include passing mandatory government background checks (allow for between 4 to 8 weeks) and complete any other CSIRO requirements. 

a) Applicants are required to submit an expression of interest (EOI) following the instructions detailed on the participating university’s webpage.

b) The EOI is assessed by the supervisory team and shortlisted applicants are interviewed. 

c) The supervisory team nominates a preferred applicant and informs iPhD office.

d) The nominated applicant will be instructed to apply. 

e) The application is then assessed by the host university against PhD admission criteria. 

f) The university will issue a letter of offer for the program if all conditions have been satisfied.

Ideal student skillset 

Technical skills:

  • Programming: Proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, C++, and scripting languages.
  • Network Security: Understanding of network protocols, firewall configurations, intrusion detection systems, and network architecture.

Research skills:

  • Literature Review: Ability to analyze and synthesize existing research to identify gaps and formulate research questions.
  • Methodology: Designing and implementing robust research methodologies, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.
  • Innovation: Noble thinking and ability to innovate a new prototype to solve industry gaps in cyber security. 

 Analytical skills:

  • Problem-Solving: Strong ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex cybersecurity problems.
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluating information and arguments to make reasoned judgments and decisions.

  • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication skills for presenting research findings and collaborating with peers.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and with industry partners.
  • Time Management: Managing time effectively to balance research, coursework, and other responsibilities.
