Rajarathinam (Raj) Parthasarathy is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. He served as the Deputy Head (Head of the department) of Chemical Engineering between 2014-2016. He is currently Deputy Director of the Centre of Advanced Materials and Industrial Chemistry.
Raj graduated from the University of Madras, India and completed his MEng degree at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Raj earned his PhD from the University of Newcastle in Australia under the supervision of Laureate Professor Graeme Jameson.
Before his career at RMIT University, Raj worked as a production engineer at the Oil & Natural Gas Corporation in India for four years, followed by two years as a lecturer at the University of Malaya. He has held various positions at RMIT University, including Acting Director of the Rheology and Materials Processing Centre, Discipline Program Manager and Graduate Student Coordinator,
Raj’s research focused on multiphase flow in two- and three-phase agitated reactors, anaerobic digestors, and slurry pipelines. His research combines experimental work with mathematical and numerical modelling to find practical solutions to operational problems and achieve process intensification. He collaborated with the water industry to study the rheologically complex flow phenomena in anaerobic digesters and developed a new design solution using electrical resistance tomography. Raj also worked on developing biodegradable polymer nanocomposites and sustainable solutions for managing biomass waste. His current work focuses on developing an optimum design for agitated reactors to minimise scale growth on reactor walls, sustainable laminar transportation of mineral tailings, and techno-economic analysis of hydrogen energy systems. Raj has published 200 publications, Including 110 journal papers.
Raj has supervised forty-one graduate (Masters and PhD) students and is currently supervising six PhD students. He also taught plant design and economics and several chemical engineering courses to undergraduate students for several years.
Raj is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), UK.
