Develop a deep understanding of the global aviation industry and prepare for leadership roles across aviation operations, airport management and airline planning
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) is designed for aspiring aviation professionals who are interested in operational, managerial and planning roles. In this degree, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry, equipping you with leadership, analytical, business, and problem solving skills to ensure the smooth operation of airlines, airports and aviation businesses.
You will be able to tailor your aviation studies to suit your interests and career goals by choosing from airline and airport operations, aviation management, aircraft maintenance, human factors, aviation safety and security, and business analytics.
This degree provides a capstone experience, where you will apply your industry knowledge and skills in an aviation industry project focusing on a real-world aviation industry problem or issue. Through work-integrated learning and projects, you'll gain valuable experience that prepares you for the aviation industry from day one.
With more than 80 years of aviation education, RMIT is highly regarded by industry.
Customise your degree to suit your interests. Craft the career of your dreams through numerous general, business and aviation electives.
Project-based and work-integrated learning means you graduate equipped to be effective in a wide range of roles and levels.
With advanced research facilities in Melbourne, the RMIT Aviation Academy is at the forefront of aviation education, training, and research.
RMIT has been educating aerospace engineers for 80 years, and whether you want to become an engineer, an air traffic controller or an airport manager, the Aviation Academy is setting up our future aviation professionals to have the right skills and mindset to lead the future of the sector.
This aviation course undertakes a practical and industry-focused approach. A feature is project-based learning and work integrated learning (WIL) to ensure you graduate with the skills to work effectively in rapidly changing environments.
Throughout this degree, you will benefit from a range of learning and teaching methods. These include lectures and seminars, work integrated learning, problem-based tutorials, simulations, intensive workshops, and potentially some online and distance learning.
Your assessment may come in the forms of assignments and projects, written reports and reflective writing, work-integrated learning subjects, and a major project which addresses and solves an industry-relevant project.
The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.
Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.
Developed in collaboration with industry, you will learn from aviation experts and benefit from RMIT's long standing relationships with the Australian and international aviation industry and extensive expertise in aviation education and research.
The degree has an Industry Advisory Committee which includes senior members from a number of major national companies and from government and non-government organisations. The Committee provides comments and advice on the contents of the degree, ensuring it remains relevant to your needs as a graduate.
Throughout the degree, industry-based professionals deliver lectures, guest talks, and industry panels that are designed to enhance your understanding of the aviation industry.
In your final year of study, you will undertake a Capstone Aviation Industry Project in which you will receive feedback and support from aviation industry practitioners.
RMIT encourages you to aspire to a global career, not just a local one.
Through partner organisations in Europe, Asia and the United States, the RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program (RIIERP) offers workplace training and academic research placements of between six and 12 months.
RMIT offers a range of opportunities for our students to study abroad through global work, exchange and study experiences with over 165 partner universities worldwide.
The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred course. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.
If you have completed a nationally recognised Diploma of Engineering in aerospace or aviation you may be eligible for up to 96 credit points (equivalent to one year) in advanced standing.
If you have completed an Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Engineering, aerospace or aviation, you may be eligible for up to 144 credit points (equivalent to 1.5 years) of advanced standing.
Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.
Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.

In 2025, the annual student contribution amount (tuition fee) you will pay for a standard year of full-time study is between AU$4,627 to AU$16,992*.
Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.
Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.
You may be eligible to apply for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of up to the full amount of your student contribution fees. You may also be eligible to apply to defer payment of your SSAF through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

For information on how to pay your fees or how to apply for a refund, please see Paying your fees and applying for refunds.
If you are offered a Commonwealth supported place, your tuition fees are subsidised by the Australian Government.
Your share of the fee (student contribution) is set on an annual basis by the government and is determined by the discipline areas (bands) of your individual enrolled courses, not the overall program.
The Australian Government has introduced changes to university funding and student contribution fees under its Job-ready Graduates Package.
The fees in the table below apply to students who commence their program in 2025. Fees for continuing students are available at fees for Commonwealth supported students.
Each course (subject) falls into a band. The band determines the student contribution amount for the course.
Amounts listed in the table below are based on a standard, full-time study load (96 credit points per year) with all courses in the same band. A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load or for enrolment in courses (subjects) from a combination of bands.
You can learn how to calculate your exact tuition fees for units from different bands at Fees for Commonwealth supported students.

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.
If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.
You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying).
